Uri Brenner

Uri Brener was born in Moscow in 1974, into a musical family (mother – violinist at the opera, father – bassoonist at the former USSR Symphony orchestra under E.Svetlanov). He has received his first piano lessons at age of four and then became a pupil at the Central Music School attached to the P.I. Tschaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow with a focus on piano, bassoon and later composition.

From 1989 to 1991 he was a student at the Gnessin college, Moscow, were he got an advanced training with focus on piano, bassoon and composition with Tatjana Chudova, Yuri Butzko and others.

In 1991 Uri settles in Duesseldorf, Germany, were he continues his studies at the Koeln Hochschule (with a focus on bassoon), at Sweelick Conservatory of Amsterdam with Prof. Dan Manneke (composition) and later at the Robert Schuman Hochschule in a composition class under prof. M.Trojan until 1996 when he settles in Israel.

During this period he was active performing his own compositions (including a Benefice Concert in Palais Wittgenstein and in Schauspielhaus, Duesseldorf); at the same time he made his first experiences in public jazz performance as a member of the "Sunlight Jazz Trio" and joining other groups including big bands and klezmer ensembles. Uri played also as a first bassoonist in the Aachen symphonic student orchestra joining concerts around the country and some major projects, among them "Figaro Hochzeit" in cooperation with the Aachen Opernhaus.

Uri joined courses with prominent composers such as Dieter Delamot, Detlev Glanert and others. He writes music to a short film, "Gib`s auf!" (by Ralf Rueckhauer), numerously shown by German TV (`Premiere` channel), at various Film Festivals around Germany, and also presented at the International Jerusalem Film Festival 1996.
After he moved to Israel, Uri has become a youngest member of the Israeli Composers League and most of his works are being edited by IMC ( Israeli Musical Center) and IMI (Israel Music Institute).

His music has been performed by him and by other musicians in many concerts, festivals and workshops in Israel (Israel Festival, Jerusalem Theatre, Tel-Aviv Art Museum, Einav Centre) and abroad – Germany (Palais Wittgenstein), Australia (Canberra School of music), Switzerland (Auditorium Maximum, Zurich), Czechoslovakia (Music Academy of Prague), USA (Museum of Modern Art, NY), Canada (The “Arts & Letters Club”, Toronto) , Italy (Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia, Bologna), Latvia (“Farinelli Fest” Riga) and Croatia, where Uri has been invited as a special guest at the International Festival of Modern Music, Pula in 2003).
Among performers of his music there are such distinguished musicians and ensembles as Anton Dressler (Italy), Sergey Ostrovsky (USA), Rachel Mercer (Canada), Arkady Shilkloper (Germany/Russia), Gavin Clark (Australia), Burkart Zeller (Germany), Evgenia Epstein (Israel), Marina Minkin (USA-Israel), "Musica Nova"(Israel), "Aviv" quartet (Israel – France), "Continuum" ensemble (NY, USA), New Julliard ensemble(NY, USA) and others.
Uri joins occasionally broadcasts on Israeli classical music channel `Kol HaMusika` presenting his own music, improvisations and the music by other artists, he has also appeared in TV shows. Two CDs with U.Brener`s music have been released ("Music for piano duo"/ The New Stream - series, 2000; "Music from Ein Karem"/ The Composers Series, MFEK 0202, 2003). A piece by Uri for cembalo solo is included in a CD “Harpsichord music by Israely composers” released by Albany Records Ltd. In 2007 (TROY 977). Uri is a recipient of several awards among which are "The America-Israel Cultural Fund" scholarship, status of Extraordinary Talented Composer given by the Special Committee of the Israeli Government (1997), `Klon` Prize for Best Young Israeli Composer (2000) and Presidential Scholarship at the Bar-Ilan University (2004), were he finishes his doctoral studies in composition and musicology.
Uri is also 2006 winner of the Israeli Prime Minister prize for composition.

Uri has composed over 50 works in various styles for different instruments and their combinations, including 3 piano sonatas, chamber music, pieces for string and symphony orchestra, Chamber Symphony (1991), “Two Psalms” (1993) for mixed Choir and orchestra, Sinfonia Concertante (2006) for viola and symphony orchestra, Piano Concerto (2006) and others.

While still in Moscow Uri got acquainted with Jewish religious and cultural heritage, and, as a result of several years study in a High Talmudic Seminaries, Uri was in 2004 ordained as a Rabbi.

Since 2003 Uri has dedicated most of his public concert appearances to free improvisation and to crossover music, bringing together elements of classical music, folk and jazz, leading a series of concerts at the Bar-Ilan University under the name "Fujazz" and performing with some renown musicians and artists such as Arkady Shilkloper, Anton Dressler, Shlomo Deshet, Gilad Hildesheim, Emmanuel Halperin, Sergei Ostrovsky, Pavel Vernikov, Arkady Gottesman, Elias Faingersh and many others. On the basis of this activity, he founded in 2004 a group called "Tabula Rasa", which has been performing with a great success around the country including some prestigious Israeli concert halls such as Confederation House in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

In 2005 Uri initiated a project together with Mr. Arkady Shilkloper, a renown jazz horn player, who on this occasion was for the first time visiting Israel as a soloist, during which concerts, broadcasts and recordings in Israel took place in cooperation with the "Tabula Rasa" group.
In the fall 2007 Uri has been invited by Mr. Schilkloper for a joint performance at the London Jazz Festival in the famous Purcell Room ( Southbank Centre, London).

2007 Uri was appointed as a composer in residence of the Israel Sinfonietta orchestra of Beer-Sheva , Israel. The premiere of his Piano Concerto called “Blares Clouds Celebrations” together with the orchestra took place on 27th and 29th October under conduction of Doron Salomon with the composer as a soloist.
Lately Uri has been awarded a prestigious ACUM prize for this piece.
