Avner Hanani

Israeli composer and pianist Avner Hanani was born in 1974 in Jerusalem. He holds graduate degrees in both composition and piano. After several years as a pianist, including numerous recitals, radio broadcasts and performances as soloist with orchestras, his composition career began to takeoff. Since then, his music has been performed throughout Europe, the United States and Israel. His musical output is connected to both minimalism and other more traditional classical forms, characterized by vibrant rhythmic ongoing motion and rich harmonic language.
Hanani is a graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (B.Mus), Tel-Aviv University (M.Mus, Summa cum Laude) and the Royal Northern College of Music, United Kingdom (PG Dip, with Distinction; M.Phil). He served as a Musician of Excellence in the Israeli Army. During his studies in Tel-Aviv he was awarded a scholarship from the Italian government in order to pursue his musical activities in Italy. He won 1st prize in the International Composition Competition Coups de Vents 2008 in France. Other scholarships and awards include the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and RNCM.
Avner Hanani has performed as soloist with orchestras in Israel and the United States, including the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra IBA and Utah Symphony Orchestra. He gave numerous recitals and was recorded and broadcast both as composer and pianist in Israel, the United States and Europe. He also won Israeli Radio’s Young Artist prize for best performance of Israeli music.
Among others, Hanani held professional sessions and master-classes with composers Steve Reich, Luciano Berio, Mark Anthony Turnage, James MacMillan and performers Alfred Brendel, Murry Perahia and the Guarneri String Quartet. Steve Reich wrote concerning Hanani’s works: “…They strike me as the work of an extremely talented young man with a very fluent and polished compositional technique…”. A piece by Hanani was chosen by Steve Reich as the only Israeli piece to be performed as part of his concert in Tel-Aviv celebrating his 70th birthday.
A number of his pieces have been recorded on label CDs, and he has pieces published by Studio-Music (London) and Boosey & Hawkes (New-York).
